I am finally at it again...
Still not unpacked from Vegas.. ain't nobody got time fo dat!
I have finally started on the bottom of my dress! First I had to cut off excess fabric and finish the edges on the bottom part of the top it looked like this:
And then this:
And then I finished the bottom edges together using a good old zigzag stitch so I was ready to add some organza to the bottom. I took about a yard of organza, put the wrong sides together, and used a zig zag stitch to finish the edges together, turned it right side out, and pinned it on the dress:
But I realized I would need to finish the side edges of the organza and I did not want it to look really bulk so I looked at a tutorial :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfnQcn_SAGM
That lady seems to know what she is talking about and I did not want to fold the material because it loses some of the flow when you fold to hem and it hangs much differently. Basically I did a zig zag stitch and then melted the fraying parts so that it looks smooth and will not fray again. If you use this tutorial I highly recommend practicing to find out how close you can put the fabric to the flame because if you put it too close you will end up with a black mark.
Below you can see that I pinned the organza to the dress the way I planned to stitch it: between the two organza layers.
The picture below shows what the edges look like after being finished
I attached the organza using a straight stitch and my usual top stitch needle and satin foot. Then I tried it on and played around with how I will do the pickups:
I think I like the looks of this better and I will probably do this... Now back to sewing!
Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more! I plan to finish very soon :)
Side note:
check out this awesome pic my friend took of the sunset through a barnacle:
